13pt adapted the shields of Yale’s twelve residential colleges for the New Haven Apple Store.

The original shields use seven heraldic tinctures: two metals, four colors and one fur.

The challenge was to distill the designs down to one metal and one color: blackened steel on pale limestone. The designs had to be streamlined enough to be cut from plate metal, while also eliminating the need to mount separate floating elements to the wall.

In consultation with Yale and Apple, 13pt redrew the twelve shields, which were fabricated and mounted to the store’s exterior wall on Oct. 3, 2011.
