I’m a designer known for the clear and elegant visual explanation of complex information.
I was a graphics editor at The New York Times for 20 years, where I designed more than 2,000 graphics, won more than 80 awards and filmed in Antarctica and CERN. I left The Times in 2025 to pursue my own projects and am available for freelance design and consulting.
I’ve given many talks on information design, and developed a simple format to share the transcripts and slides online.
I discovered Edward Tufte’s books in high school, which led to a degree in Art and East Asian Studies at Yale. After college I designed typefaces at The Font Bureau and dotcom-era websites at Interactive Bureau, then founded 13pt in 1998.
I play Scottish smallpipes, a quieter cousin of the Great Highland Bagpipe. I studied and taught Iaido for two decades and earned the rank of Godan, or 5th degree black belt. I run two Scouting America groups and currently live in the Chicago area.
